Beethoven Trio Cycle I

11 March 2020

The Start of a Year-Long Project

One of my projects in 2020 is a complete performance of the Beethoven piano trios with wonderful colleagues, Ben Gilmore and Ashok Klouda. We’ve spread the trios over three concerts and are lucky to be playing each programme three times in venues around the country. We kicked off our series with a bang last weekend with a lovely house concert, followed swiftly by Conway Hall Sunday Concerts and Luton Music on Mondays.

The Conway Hall concert was a fundraiser for the long-standing chamber music series, of which the tagline has been ‘affordable music for all’ since its inception in 1887. I’m very pleased to announce that we raised over £1200 at the concert, thanks to some lovely people who gave very generously! This will be invaluable in sustaining the concerts, and hopefully in supporting some new musical projects at Conway Hall too.

Our performance in Luton’s quirky Bear Club was a pleasure as always (I think it was my third or fourth time playing there), but was particularly sad this time as The Bear Club is closing on Sunday 24th May. This will be a huge loss to the cultural life of Luton in my opinion, and I’ve got my fingers crossed that Music on Mondays will be able to find an equally warm, intimate space to house their concerts. They certainly deserve it! I’ll be back to play for them again in November with Karel Bredenhorst, in another Beethoven event - the first of three concerts in which we will play all the cello sonatas!
