Dominic Childs and Simon Callaghan present a recital of works either written by or inspired by women, all of them conceived with orchestral as well as piano accompaniment in mind. Paule Maurice's Tableaux de Provence gives the disc its title; with it are pieces by Fernande Decruck, who did as much as anyone to establish the saxophone within the French concert tradition, Debussy's Rhapsodie of 1903, written at the request of the American saxophonist Elise Hall, and François Borne's Carmen Fantasy. Between them they trace the instrument's passage from novelty to a serious voice in French music.
