The harmonium's rise in the second half of the nineteenth century brought a large chamber repertoire with it, especially in France, where the instrument had been developed and refined — and the pairing of harmonium with piano proved particularly popular. On these recordings the accordion takes the harmonium's role: it produces its sound in a near-identical way, and the performers' hope is that the shift from a nineteenth-century French harmonium to a modern classical accordion will allow these delightful pieces to be played more often and to reach the widest possible audience.
