Well supported by the Swiss phalanx of St Gallen led with finesse by the Lithuanian conductor Modestas Pitrénas, he gives these concertos with purely romantic accents an excellent version which makes us regret that the editorial approach did not include the third concerto. Anyway, lovers of rarities will be delighted.

Callaghan's Steinway sounds wonderfully weighty and agile, and the balance between piano and orchestra is persuasively natural, ...It's a real discovery, and certainly cause for further exploration.

With the Sinfonieorchester St Gallen, conducted by Modestas Pitrėnas

Carl Reinecke was one of the most influential musicians in nineteenth-century Germany: director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus for thirty-five years, teacher of Grieg, Janáček, Sullivan and Albéniz, and a pianist admired above all for his Mozart. His own concertos have all but vanished. This disc takes three of the four — No. 1 in F sharp minor, No. 2 in E minor and No. 4 in B minor — spanning forty years of his working life, from 1860 to 1900. Simon Callaghan returned to the same orchestra and conductor the following year to complete the set.
