With Clíodna Shanahan (piano)
The story of Elias Parish Alvars (1808–49) is a journey from obscurity to something close to international celebrity. Berlioz, repeatedly spellbound by concerts Alvars gave in Germany, called him ‘the Franz Liszt of the harp'. This sorcerer of the harp — and an equally phenomenal pianist — attracted the patronage of the aristocracy and royalty of Europe throughout his short career. The two-piano works recorded here by Clíodna Shanahan and Simon Callaghan show what that reputation was built on.
