Myaskovsky's two cello sonatas stand nearly forty years apart: the First, Op. 12, of 1911, written in a warmly Romantic idiom he never entirely abandoned, and the Second, Op. 81, of 1948, among the last works he completed. Between them on this CPO release sits the Cello Concerto, Op. 66, with shorter pieces by Lyadov and Rimsky-Korsakov as encores. It followed the Lyrita disc of Roger Sacheverell Coke's cello sonatas that Raphael Wallfisch and Simon Callaghan had made the previous year.
