Despite his facility on the violin and the importance he attached to his lessons with Albert Sammons, George Lloyd was slow to write for his own instrument. Not until 1970, and the First Violin Concerto, did he give it a leading role — but the experience seems to have released something, and over the next seven years came a run of pieces for violin and piano, a full-scale sonata and a second concerto. This disc gathers the works for violin and piano together. The Seven Extracts from The Serf (1974) were published only in 2024 and are recorded here for the first time.
