primordial musicality and a flawless technique

Piano and Cello between the Church Bells

It was not easy logistically, this recording. The Dutch cellist Karel Bredenhorst and the English pianist Simon Callaghan, under the name Duo Verzaro, chose to record their first CD in a small church in Cervo, on the Italian coast: Oratorio di Santa Caterina. This is the place in which much chamber music has been made every summer since 2012 during Bredenhorst’s festival, Cervo Chamber Music.

For a good take, the sounding of the church bells had to be planned around. Also pigeons were out and about. Listening to the CD one notices nothing of these challenges. An impressive performance of Miaskovski's Sonata for cello and piano puts the ears on edge. And we were still coming to from Brahms' Second cello sonata, presented with primordial musicality and with a flawless technique.

For Schumanns 'Fantasiestücke', a bit more sense of early romanticism wouldn’t have been missed, but 'Introduction & Polonaise Brillante' by Chopin, on the other hand, sparkles again. “Crazily talented”, as Bredenhorst mentioned about his companion Callaghan. We would like to add that this comment applies to both musicians.

Duo Verzaro 2016

Karel Bredenhorst and I are very pleased to present our first CD, on the new Cervo Chamber Music label! It was a wonderful experience recording in Cervo and the fantastic acoustic of the Oratorio di Santa Caterina is captured on this disc in some of the finest works for cello and piano. The first ever CD recording in Cervo, undoubtedly the first of many!
